There are seven species of sea turtle and three come to lay their eggs on the beaches of Zihuatanejo; the olive-green and smallest of the sea turtles; the leatherback, the largest of all, with its characteristic shell covered in skin; and the hawksbill turtle, so coveted for its mottled shell.

Only one in a thousand turtles reaches adulthood. Each nesting season yields an average of 80 to 100 eggs, and each turtle camp cares for up to 100 nests, of which 85% of hatchlings are successful.

Releasing baby animals is a magical and refreshing experience of connecting with nature. Don't hesitate to contact a certified camp and participate as a volunteer in the activities they offer to the public.

Spawning season: July to October (during this season, patrols and nest recovery are carried out)

Traveling whales and their

visit to Zihuatanejo

According to the latest records, more than 21,000 whales live in the Pacific Ocean, and every year hundreds of them travel thousands of kilometers in search of the warm waters of Zihuatanejo for two fundamental actions in their life cycle: to have their young and to look for a mating partner.

The Guerrero Whale Research Project has created an identification catalog with more than 300 whale tails; the distinct coloration, shape and scarring pattern of the lower part of the caudal fin are its fingerprint.

The whale watching season runs from December 15th to March 20th, during which marine wildlife observation tours are offered where, in addition to whales, other large sea species can be found: turtles, dolphins and manta rays.

The trained guides have access to a whale-watching network, allowing them to work together to find whales and coordinate to give them space.

Working with a trained guide increases your chances of spotting whales and dolphins, and you'll have the peace of mind of knowing that the animals aren't stressed by your presence.
